Dr Robert Mooney graduated from NUI, Galway in 2018 with a PhD in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, having previously obtained a first class honours undergraduate degree in Sport & Exercise Science from Manchester Metropolitan University. Robert joined ATU (formally GMIT) as a lecturer in Sport & Exercise Science in 2016 where he teaches on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, mainly in biomechanics. He is currently the acting Head of Department of Sport, Exercise and Nutrition at ATU. In addition, he has over 20 years’ industry experience in a variety of research, scientific and management roles. He was the performance analyst for the Irish swimming team for a number of years and provided support at World and European Championships.
Robert’s research interests span several areas, including sports biomechanics, usability testing, engineering, data analytics and computer programming. He is particularly interested in the measurement of human movement using wearable sensor-based technologies. He has developed technology for use in elite swimming which allows for real-time analysis of swimmers’ performance without the requirement for video recordings or other time-consuming and expensive equipment. More recently Robert has focused on other applications of wearable technologies, including in gait analysis, golf and for the measurement of physical literacy in children.
Presentation Abstract
The role of the Performance Analyst in sport has changed dramatically in recent years and continues to evolve to keep pace with technological developments. Much of this development has focused on increasing the range and quantity of data that may be collected. However, more recently the focus has also shifted towards reducing the manual processing involved in generating these data, allowing the Performance Analyst more time to devote to analysis and feedback that will impact upon performance. As part of the development of these new technologies, it is essential that all key stakeholders are involved in the process. These include engineers, sport and exercise scientists, computer scientists, coaches and the athletes themselves. However, do these individuals understand each other’s motivations and needs adequately? If you build it, will they come? Moreover, the accuracy of many newly developed commercially available technologies often remains unknown and the role of academic researchers in the validation of these tools is an essential component in building trust in the reliability and validity of new products for the end user.

Overview of Session:
- Introduction [Paint the Picture]: In my 15+ year career, I was never learning from anyone I could really relate to. I never knew any of my professors, lecturers, tutors, or lab demonstrators to be part of the LGBTQ+ community. In my first job, I never had a colleague openly visible as part of the community. I didn’t realise the impact this absence of LGBTQ+ role models had on me until I started making friends with other LGBTQ+ people in STEM.
- 15-minute Overview of ERGs giving an overview of what each company has done recently
- Why?
- Gives the audience with ERGs in place potential ideas for their own events e.g. Building Inclusive Homes, HIV Information Session.
- Gives leaders considering the ROI in any ERG real examples of what can be done
- Shows the audience what good can look like.
- Why?
- Panel Discussion:
- Each panelist gives intro and brief overview of their journey in Tech
- As someone who identifies as X, in what ways do you think your experience has been different from people who identify as heterosexual?
- Are you out/open at work? If not, why not?
- Power of Allyship – Have they benefited from allyship? What advice would you give to allies in 2023?
- Any workplace challenges?
